Tonight's Homework

Rounding trouble?  You may have to use scientific notation on a few of these.  If you are rounding to TWO digits then you look at the 3rd significant digit (from the left) to decide if the second digit stays the same or rounds up.  Ex.   5.067  would round to 5.1 if I were asked for only 2 significant figures.

Dimensional Analysis -
1.  Set up your unit following the format below.

    given  x  unknown  = unknown
                    given

2.  Write a 1 beside the larger unit in the conversion factor. It may be in the top or bottom of the fraction.

3.  Look at your metric prefix scale (number line) and count how many spaces the unit prefixes are apart.
kilo to centi  is 5 spaces apart so write 10^5 beside centi because it is the smaller unit.
micro to milli is 3 spaces so write 1000 beside micro because it is the smaller unit.

4. SOLVE! Use your calculator if you need to. Multiply the given by the value on top of the fraction and then divide by the value on the bottom of the fraction.

Answers 1. 0.056 L  3. 1.2 x 10^-4 or 0.000 12 cg  5. 430 L
