Ion Frayer Model

Great student participation today. Our Frayer models were superb!
We learned a great deal! Check your learning by studying the picture and pondering the essential question:
What do these ions have in common?

Do HW; Win Candy

It is time for that favorite fall Halloween tradition.  Monday will be a homework assignment. If in spite of Halloween you complete your HW you will be entered to win the Halloween candy lottery. I will draw a few popsicle sticks in each class and IF you've done your homework you get the pumpkins or snickers or skittles you so desire.

Here is the homework if you want to get started. DO HOMEWORK and WIN CANDY.

Electrons in Atoms

These are the terms for this first part "Electrons in Atoms."  Terms will be on Wednesday's (11/2) quiz. This unit isn't hard if you study bit by bit. It's not a unit you can catch up on the night before. After you've read the flashcards; try a game. How about a round of Space Race?

Answer sheets

This is last night's homework with answers we used in class today. I know the equations didn't copy. I'm working on it!

Test practice page 1 KEY
Please let me know if these don't work!  I'm trying google documents and I think I like it but it's different. I'll pull up an entire key in class tomorrow.

Atomic Structure and Nuclear Decay TEST

Studying for the test should not be too stressful. We have time to review the test practice page in class before the test! Your classwork shows you know half life problems and nuclear equations pretty well.  If you want more practice on those you can complete the "halfws" for extra credit (see paperclip on 10/24) or just try a problem from the PowerPoint called "Radioactivity and Half Life". (Click on the paperclip on Wed, 10/25).
Need more practice on nuclear equations? Try these multiple choice questions at sciencegeek.net

I'll be adding an oil drop experiment animation to the page later just for the curious.

Mole Day was great!  Thank you for making great cards and sculptures!

TEST EXTRA CREDIT will be converting grams to moles and then atoms like #6 we studied in class today!

Nuclear Power Plant Project

Test grade - Due Oct 12th

This link is to a useful diagram. You could print and work on drawing the diagram later if you needed.

Part two is practicing terms until you can make a good grade on the quizlet test. Your test should have 15 written questions like this one.

Part 3 is a summary and response to an article about nuclear power. My favorite source for science news that is easy to read (about a page and high school reading level) is Science Daily. This link is the nuclear energy news page.
Your article summary and response should each be a paragraph. Please do not write 2 pages. Write a thoughtful paragraph with a main idea. It is okay if my response to the article is different than yours. It should be personal and it is okay to mention emotions as well as intellectual response.

Your handout mentions a graphic organizer option (thinking maps, mind map, charts or whatever works for your article) and you may complete that but make sure it is eye-catching.

The handout also includes a grading rubric you should check out.

Homework Help Gas Collection Problems

Consider the following problem:
A 500 mL sample of oxygen was collected over water at 23°C and 760 torr pressure. What volume will the dry oxygen occupy at 23°C and 760 torr? The vapor pressure of water at 23°C is 21.1 torr.

What are we solving for? V2
Plan:   1 - Use Dalton's Law to find P02
                2 - Use Combined Gas Law to solve for V2

PTOTAL = POXYGEN - PWATER
POXYGEN = 760 torr – 21.1 torr
POXYGEN = 738.9 torr

Given: V1 = 500 mL          V2 = ?               (No change in T)
                  P1 = 738.9 torr         P2 = 760 torr

V2 = P1V1 T2       (Temperature can cancel as there is no change.)
                P2 T1

V2 = (500 mL) (739 torr) = 486 mL dry O2
                         (760 torr)

Test Hints

Friday's test will have 25 or so multiple choice, 8-10 problems you have to show work for AND two questions that require written explanations.

Things to do to make sure you are ready for the FRIDAY's test:
  • (5 min.) Click on the density of a gas link and follow along.
  • (5 min.) Check that you have memorized Avogadro's number, STP values, R and can match units to their quantity (ex. atm is a unit of pressure.)
  • (10-20 min) Study terms at quizlet. Take a test.
  • (10-45 min) Visit sciencegeek.net and try the phase diagrams and Ideal Gas Law. See the extra practice tab for more if you have time. This is a low risk test like situation (IDEAL WAY TO STUDY!)
  • Try the multiple choice Questions for Review.
  • Study practice test 2.
We will discuss phase diagrams and changes between states of matter this week as well as solving problems from about water displacement.  Depending on your success with this material we can add a lab to the mix this week.  On Wednesday we are visiting the computer lab to do some practice test questions.  Please do bring your book and notebook so that you can refer to your notes as you work.

YOUR HARD WORK WILL PAY OFF. Plan some time for homecoming fun but keep some time every day for chemistry. Hard work now will keep paying off as we cover new topics.

We think..

Here are the results by class of the we think activity.  Remember the bottle started out flexible and then grew harder to squeeze as the fizz keeper was pumped. If we opened the cap it sounded like a new soda bottle had just been opened.
3rd period - Pressure increased. Most think volume remained the same and that temperature did too. (A few think temp changed and increased.) The number of moles increased.
4th period - Pressure was increased. Volume is split between increasing and staying the same. One group votes for temperature increasing and number of moles increasing while one says these stay the same.
7th period - Pressure was increased. This is the only one we agree one, but most students think number of moles increased. For volume and temperature some think increase and some that it didn't change.
What do you think now?

SHS students read from First Circle

On Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at 6:00 P.M., the Hub City Bookshop downtown on Morgan Square will host a reading of poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction by writers from Spartanburg High School who had work published in the 2011 edition of First Circle, the school's award-winning literary magazine. As many of you know, our students have won statewide first-place awards for their writing in each of the last three years, so this will be a good opportunity for everyone to see what the excitement's all about. The reading is free and open to the public.

Test Scores

Students and parents - good news for test scores.  Looks like I did not add properly on some of your test papers.  We will go over tests in class Monday and everyone can check my math.  I will be happy to issue new progress reports as soon as test corrections are done! I apologize to everyone sincerely. I've been worried about grades as I know you have been. It is a great comfort to me to know that we have achieved more than these test grades reflected.

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Lab Quiz is TOMORROW. You may use your lab notes. You need to read your notes and mark your questions. I will take questions before the quiz.
Test Corrections can be made in class tomorrow as well. I'll be happy to give new averages on Monday once test scores are improved and you get the lab quiz in there too!

 If this isn't the video you need there are lots more at brightstorm.com
They have math, chemistry, and physics that I have used. Great way to study if you learn by listening! There are videos that would help in 3 different units at brightstorm.  Check out "Introduction to Chemistry", "Matter", and even the phase change video in "Kinetic Molecular Theory." The KMT videos are a bit more detailed than you need right now, but there is a good explanation of our heating curve graph.

Another new terms set posted

All 32 terms are in the flashcard set at quizlet!
You need to know ALL of them for the test, but Wednesday's quiz is just the new words.  Hard work pays off; keep studying.

New Terms Set Posted

Quizlet flash cards for Friday's quiz are posted. You can study lots of ways but I like the "test" feature.  Your test is NOT matching or multiple choice so study some more after you think you've mastered the words in quizlet. The quiz will actually have 11 questions and you only have to get 10 correct to make 100%.  Have fun studying.

Tonight's Homework

Rounding trouble?  You may have to use scientific notation on a few of these.  If you are rounding to TWO digits then you look at the 3rd significant digit (from the left) to decide if the second digit stays the same or rounds up.  Ex.   5.067  would round to 5.1 if I were asked for only 2 significant figures.

Dimensional Analysis -
1.  Set up your unit following the format below.

    given  x  unknown  = unknown
                    given

2.  Write a 1 beside the larger unit in the conversion factor. It may be in the top or bottom of the fraction.

3.  Look at your metric prefix scale (number line) and count how many spaces the unit prefixes are apart.
        kilo to centi  is 5 spaces apart so write 10^5 beside centi because it is the smaller unit.
        micro to milli is 3 spaces so write 1000 beside micro because it is the smaller unit.

4. SOLVE! Use your calculator if you need to. Multiply the given by the value on top of the fraction and then divide by the value on the bottom of the fraction.

Answers 1. 0.056 L  3. 1.2 x 10^-4 or 0.000 12 cg  5. 430 L
